If lots of question marks are popping up in your head then we recommend finding out the answers to those questions as the benefits will lead to an increase in things like; higher levels of happiness, job satisfaction, self-confidence, and closer bonds with family, friends, and colleagues. The Enneagram is an absolutely amazing emotional-intelligence tool for giving couples, families, friends, and business partners the ability to create empowering relationships built on a deeper understanding of each other’s drivers and personality.

This post is the first in a series of nine. In this post we will cover;
1. what is the Enneagram type 1, what strengths type 1’s bring into the relationship and some type 1 weaknesses to be mindful of,

2. For the other person in a relationship with a type 1, how you can minimize confrontation and connect with you’re type 1

What is The Enneagram Type 1, Your Strengths & Weaknesses:
The Enneagram type 1 is a highly productive type. They want to follow the rules, model the right way of doing things & always wanting others to do "it" the right way as well, and are typically very responsible. They will provide for the home, possibly dictate how the home looks, inside and outside. The type 1 will be highly involved in their family, showing them the right way.

A. The Social-Subtype (SO) will want to lead the household, as they want to be the example,

B. while the one-to-one (SX) wants to bond with you, show you how, then let you take the reins, and tend to be more outwardly angry, than the other subtypes

C. And the Self-Preservation (SP) would rather you take the lead at home, as they are less likely to want all the responsibility.

Strengths at Home:
A. They will do a responsible job providing for the home. Whether they are bringing home the bacon, or maintaining household logistics you can count on the 1.

B. It is not likely that the stay-at-home type 1 will let the household become disorganized. The stay-at-home 1 will know what everyone is doing, what their schedules are, when bills are do, and that choirs are assigned and get done correctly. Commonly, you’ll find them doing everything, so that its done correctly

C. As the head of the household the 1 will easily take on that responsibility and "own it". They aren’t likely to let the family live outside of their means, as that would be irresponsible. They will easily take an instructor role, showing the family what & how to do things responsibly

Weaknesses at Home:
A team will always out do an individual. As a Type 1 these tips may be useful,

A. Occasionally people need to do things on their own without your presence lurking over their shoulder, sometimes people need to fail to learn

B. There is great benefit in sometimes being a student, you don’t always have to be the teacher.

C. There’s frequently more than one right answer, be careful about getting stuck on the small stuff.

D. Being vulnerable can be an uncomfortable place to be. Truly listening requires being vulnerable. If you’re ok with being vulnerable you are moving in the right direction.

E. Things shouldn’t always have to go your way, listening to your family and entertaining their ideas (at least once in a while) is both healthy & important.

Minimizing Confrontation
If you’re a different personality type from the 1 (but your familiar with that personality type) you can remove all knowledge and experience of the person themselves and communicate with them in effective ways just based on knowing they are a Type 1.

This knowledge and experience of the Type 1 allows you to;

A. Notice when they are holding in their anger

B. Know that the 1 will listen intuitively to you (typically)

C. Know how to get your point across to the 1 (be direct, most of the time)

D. When being subjective, you’ll need to prepare them for it (Objective thought/reasoning goes farther with the 1)

E. Know why they are taking so long (they are trying to make it perfect)

F. Know how to persuade them

Tips / Reminders
1) The Type 1 is a work horse and the work they produce is high quality but typically low yield, as they can spend so much time perfecting all the details.

3) As a 1, restrain yourself from taking on all the responsibilities yourself, as others need the chance to learn & grow.

Closing
The Enneagram can show us how perfectionistic we can be, whether we are self or other oriented, how competition affects you, how we express ourselves to others, how informed we like to be, how team oriented we desire to be, how much fun you need, how aggression affects you, and how people pleasing affects your relationships.

The Type 1 loves perfection, they demand it from themselves and expect others to follow their lead. The Type 1 is more self-oriented or things oriented. Competition can be difficult for the one as losing would mean they were not perfect and the one will take losing hard. Objectivity is important and therefore the 1 needs to be well informed. Some 1’s (the SO) can be very good in teams others find it more difficult, as it can be painful to see others cutting corners or not doing their part. For the 1 it’s ok to have fun, just so long as all the work gets done. People pleasing doesn’t always come natural to the one, as they already know the right way.
